New Pet Starter Checklist

Bringing home a new pet? Start with food, water, safe space, basic supplies, first vet questions, and a calm family routine.

Pet safety note

This page gives general pet-care information. It does not diagnose, treat, or replace licensed veterinary care. Contact a veterinarian when a concern feels serious, sudden, painful, confusing, or is getting worse.

Prepare first

Safe space checklist

Quiet rest area

Set up a calm place where the pet can sleep, hide, or rest away from heavy noise and activity.

Food and water

Use food made for the pet type and life stage. Keep clean water available and avoid sudden food changes unless your vet recommends it.

Home safety

Move cords, medicine, cleaners, small objects, unsafe plants, and trash out of reach before the pet arrives.

Vet contacts

Save your veterinarian and emergency clinic contact information before you need it.

Basic supplies

Buy the basics before extras.

  • food and water setup
  • safe bed, crate, cage, tank, or habitat
  • cleaning supplies
  • carrier or transport plan
  • safe toys or enrichment
  • records folder and vet questions

Family routine

Decide jobs early.

Choose who feeds the pet, refreshes water, handles cleanup, watches for changes, and calls the vet when needed.

First-night setup

  • quiet room or safe area
  • water access
  • clean bed or habitat
  • cleanup supplies nearby
  • calm voices and short visits

Questions to write down

  • What food and amount should I use?
  • What vaccines or preventive care should I ask about?
  • What behavior or bathroom changes should I track?
  • When should I schedule the first visit?
